How to choose a brandable domain name
A practical checklist for picking a short, memorable, brandable domain name for a startup or product.
What “brandable” means
A brandable name doesn’t describe the product literally — it gives you a distinctive word you can fill with meaning, the way invented or repurposed words became famous brands. It should be short, easy to say and unlike your competitors’ names.
A quick checklist
Say it out loud: can someone spell it after hearing it once?
Keep it short: aim for two syllables and under ten letters when you can.
Avoid hyphens, numbers and double letters that cause typos.
Check meaning in other languages and markets you care about.
Search trademarks in your country and target markets before you buy.
Check social handles — they don’t have to match exactly, but it helps.
Ways to generate ideas
Blend two words (a root plus a suffix), change a vowel in a real word, use a short word plus a verb (“get”, “try”) or use the extension as part of the word (a domain hack). Our name generator does this for you and checks availability.
When the .com is taken
You can add a short prefix or suffix, choose an extension that fits your niche (.ai for AI, .io for developer tools), or make an offer for the taken name. A slightly different but available .com is often better value than a premium one.
