How to buy a domain that’s already taken
Steps to buy a registered domain safely: find the owner, make an offer, use escrow and transfer the name.
1. Check if it’s already for sale
Visit the domain — many owners show a sale page with a price or offer form. Search marketplaces as well, where names are often listed with a buy-it-now price.
2. Research its value
Run an appraisal and look at what similar names have sold for. Knowing a sensible range keeps your first offer realistic and saves time for both sides.
3. Contact the owner and make an offer
Be brief and polite, and say what you’re willing to pay. Don’t reveal that you have a big budget or urgent launch — that tends to push the price up.
4. Use escrow or a trusted marketplace
Never send money directly to a stranger. Use an escrow service or a marketplace that holds the payment until the domain has been transferred to your account.
5. Complete the transfer
The seller unlocks the domain and gives you an authorisation (EPP) code, or pushes it to your account at the same registrar. Once it appears in your account, update the DNS and contact details, and consider enabling auto-renew.
If the owner won’t sell
Note the expiry date — some domains are not renewed and become available again — or choose a different name. A good available alternative is often better than waiting.
