Are aged domains worth more?
What domain age really means for value and SEO, and how to check a domain’s registration date and history.
What “aged” means
An aged domain is one that was first registered years ago. Its creation date is public in RDAP and WHOIS records, so age is easy to check.
Does age add value?
Age on its own adds little. Old domains are often valuable because good names were registered early, not because of the age itself. A short real word registered last year can be worth more than a long phrase from 2005.
Age and SEO
Google has said that domain age by itself is not a ranking factor. What can help is the domain’s history: if it hosted a real site that earned links from reputable sites, some of those links may still point to it.
Risks with old domains
A domain may have been used for spam or penalised content. Before buying, check archived versions of the site, look at its backlinks and search for the name to see its reputation.
How to check age and history
Look up the creation and expiry dates in RDAP or WHOIS (Estimated’s appraisal shows them), browse the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, and review the domain’s backlink profile with an SEO tool.
